I woke up this morning and looked out the porthole and saw a beautiful blue sky and large whitecaps crashing against the pier. The first time we came to Costa Maya was a year after the island had been hit with by Hurricane Dean. The hurricane caused major devastation to the island and the pier.
In 2008 we traveled with friends Bob and Sandy to Costa Maya. We thought it might be fun to take a local bus down to the beach. As we drove the few minutes to the beach all we could see for miles were trees totally stripped of leaves and bark. All the buildings at the beach were covered with tarps and many were closed.
The port and island has gone through a great deal of improvement over the last few years much to my delight. That first year we just walked around the beach until we finally settled at a cozy umbrella table and enjoyed just sitting, drinking a bucket of beer and eating really good chips and salsa.
On one trip we traveled to the wonderful Kohunlich Mayan Ruins. But, our favorite activity at Costa Maya is just hanging around the port at the largest pool in the center of the central shopping mall with a swim up bar, jewelry stores and restaurants. The goal is to get off the ship as soon as possible and walk to the pool and find the perfect chair under a swaying palm. And, that was our goal today.
But first, I walked around our beautiful ship a bit and hope to get a few pictures before the areas of interest became full of people.
Eventually the whole gang made their way to the pool. Patty and Judy walked around stopping here and there while shopping, eating and making their way over to the dolphin experience. The rest of us spent time and just enjoyed wading in the pool under the warm sun.
Normally, we eat at Senor Frogs but today we decided to try Carlos’ n Charlie’s and had a great lunch. After lunch it was time to see what was in the shops. I was off to find a refrigerator magnet for my daughter, Kristine.
Back to the ship, quick nap, shower and dress for another good dinner with friends. Before going to the dining room, we walked toward the promenade deck hoping to catch the sun disappearing into the sea. Instead, I caught this beautiful sight through the window on deck 8. Tonight I enjoyed a dinner of barbeque chicken over Jasmine rice. The dinner was simple, filling and very good. I love dinner time and listening to everyone’s ideas about their day and talk about what everyone is planning for the evening.
Most of us went to the theatre to hear the full comedy of Sam Fedele. The act started off great and then he got interrupted by a passenger who was a bit in her cups and making a spectacle of herself. It seemed to throw Sam off his game and try as he might he never really regained the audience; too bad, because he was very entertaining.
Randy and I took a slow walk around the shops eventually settling at the Grand Atrium to, once again, listen to the duo of Tally and Terri. Like all entertainers, they feed off the enthusiasm of the crowd; our group was a very enthusiastic.
Tired after a full day, Randy and I headed back to our cabin and a good night’s sleep.
Tomorrow we stop at Cozumel.
